vitamin C serums (5)

And now for the Grand Masterlist, by brand:

OK, four of them.

  • a top ten: vitamin C serums with at least 10% l-ascorbic acid (or similar equivalent), cruelty-free, unscented, for at most $40.00 / 1 oz
  • the short-list: vitamin C serums with at least 10% l-ascorbic acid (or similar equivalent) for at most $50.00 / 1 oz + C-containing serums under $30.00
  • the long list: vitamin C serums + serums containing vitamin C for at most $50.00 / 1 oz
  • and the whole list (there’s about 100 or so here).

LAST UPDATED: 2014-05. (I won’t be updating prices and links, though, just adding stuff along the way: do your own checking!)

PREAMBLE: CATEGORIZATION

Those on which I did most research: under $40.00 and cruelty-free. If they have stars, they’re cruelty-free. I’ve done a similar sort of rating-system for serums from animal-tested brands, but NO STARS for them (only nice people who aren’t cruel and don’t rub their fellow-citizens get stars). I hope this also helps to show that there’s no need to take the animal-tested route: not only are there viable cruelty-free options, but the best options in terms of formulation and price are actually (as it so happens) cruelty-free.

VITAMIN C SERUMS PROPER

**** = decently-formulated vitamin C serums + decent prices + cruelty-free
—most are under $25.00, the most expensive are around $40.00;
—in the
vitamin C serums (1) post

** = near-misses: otherwise fairly decent formulation + cruelty-free
— presence of irritants (mine and/or common ones)
—and/or nearly but not quite enough vitamin C
—and/or formulae very like those in vitamin C serums (1) , but more expensive (in the $37.00 – 40.00 range), without being as heinous as the bulk of those in vitamin C serums (3)
—prices still under $50.00;
—most are in the vitamin C serums (2) post, a couple are in (3)

”’ = near-misses on price + ethics
—more expensive than those in (1) , not as heinous as the rest in (3)
—near-miss to ** status as brands are either uncertain or (ex. Neostrata) tested on animals;
—prices here in the $37.00 – 40.00 range;
—just in case, to give the benefit of the doubt, etc.: for those companies whose cruelty-free status was undeclared, I’ve emailed them to ask; if they turn out to be cruelty-free, their status will be upgraded to **

” = a miss due to indecent prices; in the vitamin C serums (3) post
—prices from $40.00 to $120.00 and more; NB: daylight robbery = naughty
—some are also guilty of further indecencies, such as animal testing; I’ve lumped them all together as being equally unkind to human wallets. WE’RE IN A RECESSION YOU GREEDY BASTARDS.

ANTIOXIDANT SERUMS CONTAINING VITAMIN C (but low percentage or no percentage declared)

* = the better class of antioxidant serums that contain vitamin C but aren’t actually vitamin C serums
—cruelty-free
—containing a fair amount of vitamin C: I’ve listed the type of vitamin C used and its percentage (if known); some are near-misses, very nearly managing to be actual vitamin C serums
—not unreasonably priced (most are cheaper)
—in vitamin C-ish serums (4)

‘ = more of the same, near-vitamin-C-serum-misses
—plus silly prices
—some are animal-tested, some aren’t: all have a blatant disregard for common humanity c/o overpricing

the rest (unmarked) = the rest of the vitamin C-ish serums (4) post
—(even) less good on the actually-containing-vitamin-C front
—some are tested on animals, some aren’t
—prices vary

Found your serum, and it’s unmarked?

—if you’re looking for a better cruelty-free decently-priced serum, with some more vitamin C in it but not necessarily loads: see those marked *
—for a better serum (but animal testing-status and price immaterial), see * and ‘
—if you’re looking for a decent cruelty-free vitamin C serum proper, see those marked ** and ***
—for a better vitamin C serum (not fussy about animals): see **, ”, ”’, and ****

As ever: if you spot any inaccuracies, errors, and omissions: please do let me know. I’m happy as ever to make corrections and updates as needed. On items marked ‘ and ”: if you’ve got exact percentages of actives and they’re over 10% (or equivalent to be functional: ex. MAP is lower, 5% max; 3-5% works out similarly to 10-15% LAA), I’d be delighted to know and make the necessary changes on this and associated posts! The more choice, the merrier!

      I don’t know, offhand: but you’ve seen what my methodology was for doing my own research and making my own decisions (see: the whole vitamin c series and elsewhere on this blog), so I would suggest that you apply those methods to your own case. Read the ingredient list, see how it compares to benchmarks, see how prices compare, look at other factors such as animal testing policies, see if here are any ingredients that are known irritants or cloggers or “bad” on your own skin, ditto for ingredients that have a higher probability of reaction etc. attached to them… And then decide.

      Knowledge is power, empower yourself!
