body lotions

There was some discussion a few days ago on MUA’s green board about body lotions…

Further to these bits, specifically. Red-flagged-emphasis mine:

expand whole thread8/7/2011 8:06PM Can’t decide between these two body lotions: Still bummed out by my “unscented” but really weird smelling Everyday Shea Baby lotion…..anyhoo, very desperate for a basic body lotion. Good basic ingredients, fragrance free, and relatively affordable. I can’t decide between these two:

Aubrey Organics Ultimate Moisturizing Lotion Unscented (8 fl oz $7.18)

Ingredients: Aqua, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, cetyl alcohol (coconut fatty alcohol), alcohol denat., camellia japonica seed oil, macadamia ternifolia seed oil, glycerin, citrus grandis (grapefruit) seed extract, glyceryl linolenate, glyceryl linoleate, tocopheryl acetate, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel) water, ascorbic acid, glycine soja (soybean) oil, daucus carota sativa (carrot) root extract, beta carotene.

Desert Essence OrganicsPure Hand and Body Lotion Unscented (8 fl oz. $4.85)

Ingredients: Aqueous Infusion of Certified Organic Extracts: Organic Olea Europea (Olive) Leaf and Organic Macrocystis Pyrifera (Sea Kelp), Organic Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf, Certified Organic Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed OIl, Certified Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Certified Organic Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Vegetable Glycerin, Certified Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) Oil, Glyceryl Stearate, Vegetable Emulsifying Wax, Stearic Acid, Xanthan Gum, Phenoxyethanol, Poatssium Sorbate.

Both have good reviews from vitacost. No major issues with the ingredients for me. Only thing I’m stuck on is that DE is obviously a little cheaper, and Aubrey’s ingredients seem a little more “pure” and basic.

8/8/2011 12:21AM unscented body moisturisers: have you tried any of these? —California Baby unscented baby lotion
—Earth Science unscented body/massage lotion: usually lives with massage stuff rather than body lotions, hence can be harder to find. It’s really seriously good stuff.
—Lavera Neutral and Babies & Kids Neutral body lotions
—also here:
has links to a bunch of other posts, and yet more unscented body lotions (amongst other unscented green-ish things…)

8/8/2011 8:23AM I haven’t. I was tempted to try ES and California Baby but California Baby seemed a little more pricey (I’m really try to save now a days) but perhaps I’ll keep an eye out for sales and discounts. I saw the Earth Science on vitacost and almost purchased it but I guess I liked that these other two lotions had less synthetic ingredients. Not to say that Earth Science had bad ingredients, I’m just extra picky with body lotion ingredients since I use it everyday all over. Maybe I’m just crazy haha.

8/8/2011 4:25PM up to you on that *shrug*

Sometimes I get annoyed about how to be diplomatic. Faced with epic fails on engaging brain before operating mouth and/or wallet. Or of feeding brain beforehand. Scratch that “sometimes”: “frequently.” One of the raisons d’être for this here blog…

OFFS re. rank stupidity. LOL and haha do no a valid argument make. Pure? Good? Bad? Less synthetic?

At least I had the satisfaction of a minimalist (and four-letter) ambiguity. I do like ambiguous pronouns.

Chocolate: philosophy: philosophical chocolate: chocolatey philosophy: any which way, an oasis of calm. Also, the only appropriate place for talk about "purity," for example in the "Critique of Pure Reason." Products depicted above are RIP I'm afraid.

Herewith a fuller attempt at continuation off-board–for those of you gentle readers with, like, functioning brains. In case you’re looking for cheap-ish, readily-available body lotions. See also: other posts on moisturiser.

INGREDIENTS–FYI, for future reference, up to you on “purity” and “naturalness” and suchlike…

Personally, give me a lab-tested product that includes man-made ingredients anyday. “Less natural” is superficial: greener re. carbon footprint, shipping, labour rights, ecosystem sustainability. More sensitive-skin friendly and thus budget-friendly–no disasters means no wasted money, and saved money can be better spent, inc. direct charitable donation. Compared to, ahem, hand-made Mom & Pop stuff using exotic imported raw materials, however much love is purported to have been put into the product. This is real life, not Like Water For Chocolate. Much as I liked the book: it’s fiction. Magic realism at that. Not magic = realism…

I don’t recommend this, by the way: pleasant enough to try out but went off very fast. Dammit: give me preservatives!!!
