eyes: some more on eyeliner

For tightlining purposes (mainly–more towards the end of this post…); best in terms of quality, performance, and bang for buck whilst remaining cruelty-free and sensitive-friendly. No bismuth oxychoride. See previous post for fuller list.

I. GREENEST OF MY BUNCH

SILK NATURALS CREAM LINER

Various colours available, of which my favourites are Mahogany (slight shimmer) and Amethyst. Works pretty much like a gel liner. Use a pencil. Clean pencil regularly.

Vegan.

Ingredients: Certified Organic Castor Oil, Fractionated Coconut Oil, Candelilla Wax, Carnuaba. Wax May contain: Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide, Magnesium Stearate, Boron Nitride, Iron Oxide, Tin Oxide

II. ANOTHER GEL
(SLIGHTLY LESS GREEN & SIMPLE, BUT WITH GOOD PERFORMANCE:PRICE RATIO)

MAYBELLINE EYE STUDIO LASTING DRAMA

There’s a black, a brown, and an eggplant. The brown is flat, non-exciting. Eggplant is lovely.

Ingredients are to the best of my knowledge vegan.

Ingredients: cyclopentasiloxane, propylsilsesquioxane, ceresin, isodecane, cyclohexasiloxane, caprylyl methicone, synthetic fluorphlogopite, silica silyate, disteardimonium hectorite, disodium stearoyl glutamate, propylene carbonate, candelilla wax, caprylyl glycol, aluminum hydroxide, calcium sodium borosilicate, calcium aluminum borosilicate, silica, tin oxide. [ +/- ci 77491, ci 77492, ci 77499/iron oxides, mica, ci 77491/titanium dioxide, ci 77007/ultramarines, ci 77510/ferric ferrocyanide, ci 77288/chromium oxide greens, ci 77289/chromium hydroxide green, ci 77742/manganese violet, ci 42090/blue 1 lake, ci 19140/yellow 5 lake, ci 77510/ferric ammonium ferrocyanide]

III. AN AUTOMATIC PENCIL

ALMAY AMAZING LASTING 16 HOUR EYE PENCIL

Vegan. The brown is nice–warm–and there’s also a brown-black. Has a sharpener at one end, but soft enough to be sharpenable on the back of your hand. The name may have changed to plain, simple “eyeliner” but it’s the same thing, and last I looked still had “16 hour[s]” on the packaging.

Ingredients: cyclopentasiloxane, ozokerite, trimethylsiloxysilicate, polyethylene, phenyl trimethicone, candelilla cera (Euphorbia cerifera wax), tocopherol, sorbic acid, methylparaben, propylparaben, BHT. [+/- mica, titanium dioxide (CI 77891), iron oxides (CI 77491, 77492, 77499), ferric ferrocyanide (CI 77510)]

IV. ANOTHER AUTOMATIC PENCIL
(PRICIER)

ORIGINS AUTOMAGICALLY

Of the multitude of earth-tones on offer, I like the plummy Mulberry the best. The range of browns lends this pencil well to use on eyebrows, coming as they do, on the redheaded, in a wide range of tones (an idea not well explored by Just For Redheads: lovely theoretical concept for the company as a whole, but poor execution in practice, as witness the crap range of liners for eyes and brows…).

Vegan.

Ingredients: cyclopentasiloxane – synthetic beeswax – disteardimonium hectorite – arachidyl behenate – microcrystalline wax – oryza sativa (rice) bran wax – tocopherol – ascorbyl palmitate [+/- mica – titanium dioxide (ci 77891) – iron oxides (ci 77491, 77492, 77499) – blue 1 lake (ci 42090) – chromium hydroxide (ci 77289) chromium oxide greens (ci 77288) – ferric ferrocyanide (ci 77510) – manganese violet (ci 77742) – ultramarines (ci 77007) – yellow 5 lake (ci 19140)]

V. ANOTHER AUTOMATIC PENCIL
(LESS GREEN, BUT ALSO LESS EXPENSIVE)

MAYBELLINE UNSTOPPABLE EYELINER

Various shades; I like the reddy-brown Cinnabar.

Not vegan.

Ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, Beeswax (Apis Mellifera), Diisostearyl Dimer Dilinoleate, PEG 6 Beeswax, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Ozokerite, Ceresin, Tocopherol (Natural Vitamin E), Retinyl Acetate (Vitamin A), Ascorbyl Palmitate (Vitamin C), May Contain (+/-): CI 77491, CI 77499 (Iron Oxides), CI 77891 (Titanium Dioxide), Mica, CI 75470 (Carmine), CI 77510 (Ferric Ferrocyanide)

VI. NOT ONE OF MY OWN, BUT YOU’LL SEE WHY IT’S HERE IN A MINUTE

MAYBELLINE EXPERT EYES

If you like the sort that needs to be sharpened; which does have advantages, for fine-tuning the point, to your personal preference. The formula is different, and–in my experience–more adaptable to a wider range of uses. My one peeve: need to look elsewhere for a range of blonde-through-reds-to-brown tones, for redhead purposes. Ex. eyebrows.

Not vegan; hesitation re. sourcing of palm-oil derivatives. Most companies buy them from big bulk suppliers, who pool and then work with the oil on a massive scale, making it somewhere between difficult and impossible to determine exact source of original production. Which is a shame, as there’ll be OK-er ones mixed in with the rest. Caveat emptor.

Ingredients: Hydrogenated Palm Kernel Glycerides, Carnauba Wax (Carnauba), Microcrystalline Wax (Microcrystallina), Candelilla Wax (Candelilla Cera), Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Sorbitan Palmitate, Stearyl Heptanoate, Hydrogenated Palm Glycerides, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Polyglyceryl-3 Diisostearate, Beeswax (Cera Alba), Simmondsia Chinensis Oil (Jojoba), Octyldodecanol, Stearalkonium Hectorite, Lecithin, Methylparaben, Propylene Carbonate, Propylparaben, Disodium EDTA, Tocopherol, Ascorbyl Palmitate.  +/- May Contain: CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499 (Iron Oxides), Mica,  CI 77891 (Titanium Dioxide), CI 42090 (Blue 1),  CI 77510 (Ferric Ferrocyanide), CI 77007 (Ultramarines).

It’s a classic. And it’s iconic:
